Remembering Okinawa - Dealing with Suicide Bombers by Victor Davis Hanson

Article written by Victor Davis Hanson, a military historian and columnist, in 2005. He was named after his uncle, Vic Hanson of Fox Company, who was killed on 18 May 1945 during assaults on Sugar Loaf Hill and Horseshoe Hill.

Note: The Marine pictured near the top of the site is Paul "Pop" Isen. "Pop" was a member of the 8th Marines of the First Marine Division. The photo was taken in May 1945 as he was "haulin' ass" across a piece of Okinawan real estate known as "Death Valley." It has became one of the icons of the battle for Okinawa Shima and for war itself. Isen is rarely, if ever, identified. He survived Okinawa and lived in Fort Myers, FL until his death on 3 October 2001.
